Reading Informational Text

Informational Text The purpose of Informational Text is to share information. The information can be simple or complex. Informational Text is everywhere !

Consumer Documents Advertisements-tell you what is available to buy and how much it costs. Schedules Labels Warranties Contracts Instruction Manuals Technical Directions

Workplace Documents Documents you encounter on a job. Business letter Application Employment Contract Work Permit Tax & Insurance Forms Employee Manual Memorandums & Email Memos

Public Documents One purpose-Supply citizens with information that may be of interest to them. Can relate to schools, churches, government agencies, the courts, etc. Typically most citizens get their public information from one source, NEWSPAPERS.

The Big Difference!! Fiction has a narrator to guide you. Informational Text YOU are the narrator.

Tips for Reading Informational Numbered steps- tell you what to do and in what order to do it. Headings- Let you know a new topic is being introduced. Boldface/italic words- Alert you to an important word or definition.

Tips for Reading Informational Graphics- maps, charts, graphs, illustrations. These graphics can contain important information!

Tips for Informational Text Phrases such as on the other hand, by comparison, by contrast, or still others believe often introduce the opposite of what came before it. Think-Comparison of items or ideas.
