Turn to someone 1. At what age are you considered “old”? Depends, but 60 & over 2. What percent of the population (U.S.) is retirement age or older? 13.7% (approx 40 million) 3. In the US, do we treat well/value our senior citizens? Both yes and no. golden retirement. Discounts. Nursing homes. Ridicules. 4. Why would the elderly be more vulnerable to civil rights abuses? Their propensity for sickness, disability, unemployment and poverty makes them more vulnerable.

'Society thinks older people are useless'

Aging population By 2050, 65+ population in US will be 20%

Two legislations The Older Americans Act and the Age Discrimination in Employment Act are two civil rights legislations intended to protect the elderly population.

Older Americans ActOlder Americans Act (1965) The first federal level initiative aimed at providing comprehensive services (e.g., long-term care, recreation, adequate income in retirement) for elders.

Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) This law forbids: employment discrimination against anyone 40+ the denial of benefits based on age mandatory retirement statements of age preferences in job notices or advertisements.
