Copy this definition in your spiral notebook for Today’s Notes  A natural resource is any material in nature that people use and value.  Pg  There are so many natural resources in our world that they are divided into two categories: renewable and nonrenewable

Renewable resources  Renewable resources are resources that the Earth replaces naturally.  Any natural resource that is alive is a renewable resource because it reproduces naturally. Examples are bananas, cotton, trees, etc..  Some renewable resources are not alive but they are still naturally replaced. For example: wind, water, solar energy, and soil.

Nonrenewable resources  Nonrenewable resources are resources that cannot be replaced.  These are natural resources that are not alive and are not replaced naturally.  Some examples include:  Iron, coal, copper, oil, diamonds, etc.

Write Renewable or Nonrenewable for each of these 1. Bananas 2. Gold 3. Coffee 4. Trees 5. Oil (petroleum) 6. Coal 7. Sugar 8. Iron 9. Fish 10. Wind 11. Natural gas 12. Copper 13. Silver 14. Cotton 15. Corn 16. Solar energy

Nonrenewable Energy Resources  Fossil Fuels: nonrenewable resources that are formed from the remains of ancient plants and animals.  The main fossil fuels are:  Coal  Petroleum (Oil)  Natural Gas

Managing Natural Resources  (Class Discussion) Are we doing a good job of managing our natural resources?  Such as gasoline? (petroleum)  Such as trees?  How can we, in Murfreesboro, manage our resources better?

Renewable Energy Resources  Hydroelectric power: the production of electricity from water power.  Re-read the 3 rd paragraph. Do you feel that we should use hydroelectric power?  Should we use windmills?  Nuclear Energy: Should we use nuclear energy?

Hydroelectricity  Pros  Power without polluting  Lessens use of fossil fuels  Cons  Disrupts animal habitats  expensive

Wind Farms  This is a wind farm.  As the wind blows, it spins the propellers which create electricity.  Pros?  Cons?

Wind Energy  Pros  No pollution!  Unlimited supply (we won’t run out of wind)  Lessens use of fossil fuels  Cons  Expensive!  Bird strikes  Expensive to repair

Nuclear Power  This is a nuclear power plant.  Pros?  Cons?

Nuclear Power  Pros  Does not pollute the air  Lots of power output!  Cons  Nuclear waste is dangerous  An accident can be deadly for people near it  It’s uses nonrenewable uranium

Mineral Resources  Mineral resources are: renewable? or nonrenewable?  Mineral resources are nonrenewable.  We can preserve our mineral resources by recycling aluminum and using these resources wisely.

Resources and Wealth  The United States is a very wealthy country.  What do you think is a major reason as to why the U.S. is so wealthy?  Read page 72.  Why is the U.S. such a wealthy country?

Essay Topic  Write a 5 paragraph essay with 3 points on the following topic.  Due Wednesday September 8 th  We have discussed pros and cons of alternative energy sources: such as hydroelectric power, wind energy, and nuclear power. Write an essay answering this question:  Should we use one or more of these forms of alternative energy? Why or why not?

Your essay  A good paragraph has about 4 sentences.  Ideas for Introduction paragraph : Explain what renewable resources are Why they are a better choice than nonrenewable resources. Explain that using renewable resources have benefits and drawbacks…explain your opinion.  3 body paragraphs : Explain your opinion and reasons for your opinion in each paragraph.  Conclusion: Tell me your opinions and summarize why you feel this way
