 Ideal for the growing of tender fruit for two reasons: 1. Soil 2. Climate

 Two types of soil found below the escarpment: 1. Sandy Loam – high in nutrients and organic matter; holds water well 2. Clay – made from tiny particles that swell when they are wet  Clay soils stay cool longer in the spring  Highly fertile, transferring more nutrients to the vines

 Micro climate: a local atmospheric zone where the climate differs from the surrounding area  In Niagara, the unique micro-climate is caused by the interaction of: Lake Ontario The escarpment

 In the spring: Water from Lake Ontario keeps temperatures cooler Allows for later blossoming period Minimal chance of frost after blooming  In the fall: Water from Lake Ontario is warm Keeps the temperatures warmer Growing and harvesting period is prolonged

 Niagara is widely recognized as the Fruit Belt  As of 2014, there are almost 80 wineries listed in the Niagara Winery Guide
