MIAMI-DADE DISTRICT SCHOOLS BEFORE the Final Decision

THINGS TO CONSIDER Initial cost of the bus Residual value Infrastructure costs & accessibility MPG equivalents/fueling times/fueling frequencies Emissions Training (drivers & mechanics) Fuel availability, cost per equivalent gal, domestic vs. foreign Examples of success User satisfaction Reliability, warranty and parts support Accuracy of proposals Cost effectiveness

DIESEL VS. CNG MDCPS 2011/2012 DIESELCNG Cost per bus w/options $93, conv. Blue Bird$145,301 Fuel cost/equivalent gallon$3.47$2.20/EQ Miles/equivalent gallon75 Additional cost per fueling station01,000,000+ Type of bus on bidAll"D" Transit style only Fueling time5-8 minutes15-20 minutes fast fill Bus range/tank 700 miles 100 gals 300 miles 7,600 cubic feet Emissions NOx = 0.2 Particulates = 0.01 gm/bhp-hr NOx = 0.2 Particulates = 0.01 gm/bhp-hr

DIESEL $93,884/15 years = $6,259  12 years = $7,824 Average fuel cost/year 16,545 miles/7MPG X $3.47 = $8,202 $14,461Annual cost/15 years = $14,461 $16,026  12 years = $16,026

$145,301/15 years = $9,686  12 Years = $12,108 Average fuel cost/year 16,545 miles/5 MPG X $2.20 = $7,280 $16,966 Annual cost/15 years = $16,966 $19,388  12 YEARS = $19,388 CNG

DIESEL 12 YEARS $16, YEARS $14,461 CNG $19,388$16,966

ADDITIONAL ITEMS TO CONSIDER Tanks on CNG bus needs changing every 10 years Additional 5 year warranty on CNG engines costs $5,800, Diesel costs $800, not available for propane Shops have to be retro-fitted for CNG I.E. explosion-proof lighting, methane detection sensors on ceilings, exhaust fan installation

Maintenance schedule for Diesel is less frequent than for CNG engine (Cummins) Per a June 2010 publication from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, U.S. Department of Energy – “At The End of a Vehicle’s Life, a CNG Vehicle is Worth No More than a Diesel Vehicle.”

Assuming that MDCPS buses travel 16,545 miles annually (per MDCPS 5 Year Transportation Plan), and are resold after 12 years in operation, then the residual value of the ISL-G CNG will be $96,869, and the ISB Diesel will be $46, 952 – a difference of $49,917. See below for MDCPS Residual Value breakdown.
