1 NORMAL Normally, trade winds blow warm surface water toward the western Pacific. This causes the thermocline to rise near the surface in the eastern.

 El Nino is an abnormal warming of surface ocean waters in the Pacific Ocean  This occurs every 3-5 years  Part of what's called the Southern Oscillation.

Subpolar Cyclone in North Pacific A massive subpolar cyclone has been moving across the North Pacific for the last few days. The storm is over 2,000 miles wide from its north to south extent, and is generating gale warnings from the Aleutian Islands of Alaska throughout the Northwest U.S. The Aleutian Low, a semi-permanent low pressure system in the Pacific, is associated with these frequent and large storms. This image was captured by the GOES-West satellite on September 21, 2011 at 1800z.
