10.9- Crises of the Cold War Cuba and its leader, Fidel Castro, began forming an alliance with the Soviet Union. Before JFK became president the CIA had secretly trained and armed Cuban exiles. Kennedy approved- using the exiles to invade Cuba.

Bay of Pigs Invasion April 17, Cuban exiles landed at the Bay of Pigs to overthrow Castro Disaster struck as Kennedy cancelled air support for the exiles to keep the US involvement a secret. Most of the exiles were killed or captured.

Berlin JFK met with the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev to discuss Berlin. The US refused to withdraw from Berlin. The Soviet leader retaliated by constructing the Berlin Wall.

Cuban Missile Crisis American intelligence agencies discovered that the Soviets were putting long- range missiles in Cuba. Kennedy ordered it stopped, but the work continued. Nuclear war was feared if missiles would be so close to US soil.

Cuban Missile Crisis Neither Kennedy nor Khrushchev wanted World War III. Kennedy decided on a blockade of Cuba and threatened war if the Soviets tried to get past the blockade. Kennedy agreed not to invade Cuba and to remove missiles from Turkey. The Soviets agreed to remove their missiles from Cuba.

Effects of the Cuban Missile Crisis This brought the world to the edge of nuclear war. Both sides agreed to work out a plan to ease tension US and USSR agreed to ban the testing of nuclear weapons in the atmosphere.
