Past Simple and Continuous

When I was a small boy we used to have a Ferrari… Past statements refer to moments in the past that do not continue to present. When I was a small boy we used to have a Ferrari. My father loved that perfect red car from Italy. It was so fast and loud. My mother never drove the car, in fact, she hated it, she even did not want to touch it. As if there was something diabolic with the car. My father used to look after the car with a religious excitement. Once, it was raining cats and dogs, he was rushing to a business meeting and he had an accident on a wet road. As he was speeding and did not manage to control the car and eventually hit the road barrier and the car was to write off. Fortunately nobody was injured. We all were happy for our father but he himself felt terribly. He even did not want to drive for many weeks after the accident and did not do well in business. We had to move to a smaller house and started to live simpler. The old good times passed away.

There are a few examples of differences between the past simple and the past continuous tenses used in similar statements. Past Simple in examples: It rained a lot last winter. I had a shower and left our hotel room. She did not wait for a long time and left for her bus. He did not find anything interesting on the market. Where did you travel last summer holiday? Past Continuous in examples in contrary: It was raining heavily this morning. I was having a shower when she entered my room. She wasn‘t waiting for me but for George. I was looking for my glasses when I stepped on them. Where were you going when I saw you in the park?

USED TO refers to long time or repeated activities in the past that ended. See the examples: We used to have a sports car. He used to eat a lot of red meat. Now he is a vegetarian. She used to love me, now she is in love with another boy. We used to use horses, now we have a tractor. She used to wear jeans only, todays she also wears skirts. They did not use to meet very often. We did not use to have much school or homework. We used to be free, we did not use to have much control. Did you use to eat a lot of meat? Did teachers use to be well respected?

Possible Solutions: We used to live on a farm in the country for years. We used to have a lot of cows in our barns. This farm used to produce hundreds of gallons of milk. Farmers did not use to have much free time even at weekends. She used to wear only a jeans set and a Stetson. We did not used to buy much food in the shops; we used to be almost self-sufficient. Did you used to eat much beef? Did your dad use to spend much time in the fields? Did your family use to have an easier life than today?
