Preparing Students for Maximizing ROI from their BSBA Lucas College and Graduate School of Business Malu Roldan Associate Dean, Undergraduate Programs

Target Success Beyond Admission Admission based on GPA, only a foot in the door – Accounting GPA requirement = 3.0 – All other concentrations = 2.6 – Former Students Returning potentially can be admitted at 2.0 SJSU depends on the skills and knowledge gained in the classes taken to meet this GPA threshold Poor planning and preparation has been seen to quickly lead to poor performance and poor academic standing or even DQ

Prep for Success: Transfers Take as many lower division requirements as possible – Math 71 (or Math 70 if student started at CCC before 2010) – English 1B – Bus 20 Financial Accounting – Bus 90 Statistics – Econ 1A Macro/1B Micro – Bus 21 Managerial Accounting – Bus 80 Business Law – Bus 91L Business Computer Productivity Tools Take the WST right after completing English 1B Consider AS-Ts in BSBAs with concentrations in Entrepreneurship, Finance, General Business, Human Resource Management, or Management – Roadmaps and more info at Roadmaps/index.html

Admission Requirements Oral Comm, Engl 1A, Math, Critical Thinking are required for admission to Business Generally, only 70 units will count towards the degree content requirements Admission is based on all_college_GPA & 4 basic skills, not on prep courses Success is based on prep courses

Prep for Success: Frosh Work with your counselor to identify your strengths, weaknesses, interests, and aptitudes Realize that College is not HS, and you will be challenged for the better See the BSBA as an investment Make the most of Frosh Orientation and the summer between HS and College Participate in FYE activities – Launch Day, Bus 10 & 12, Student Success Center Programs Be strategic – don’t bite more than you can chew, build up your GPA capital – classes get harder as you move forward – High GPA opens doors to premium experiences – Sbona honors program, study abroad, internships, Thompson Global Internship Program

SJSU Engage with SJSU early – Visit the university and participate in activities – Contact the Jack Holland Student Success Center (JHSSC) even before admission or applying for admission – Engage with faculty and counselors – Network with students (and industry) via classes & clubs Take responsibility for your success – Have a plan – work with a JHSSC advisor early on – Manage your time – Ask for help – start at JHSSC, the advising hub, Focus on excellence – C is a minimum target – Opportunities abound for those who aim for more
