Intro Majority of workers in MDC’s are in tertiary sector (provision of services) *NA = ¾ Much less in LDC’s (less than 25%) Service sector divided into 3 types 1) Consumer services 2) Business services 3) Public Services

Service Sector Employment Fig. 12-1: Over half of workers are employed in the service sector in most MDCs, while a much smaller percentage are in the service sector in most LDCs.

Consumer Services Provide services to individual consumers who desire them & can afford them Retail Services: ¼ of all jobs in US - provide goods for sale to consumers - wholesale, restaurants/food service, shops selling other goods Personal Services: 1/5 of all jobs in US - provide services for well-being/personal improvement - health care, education, beauty salons, recreation

Business Services Producer Services: 1/6 of US jobs - provide services to help people conduct other business - financial services (banks, real estate etc.), professional services (law, engineering etc.), & support services (advertising, janitorial etc.) Transportation & Similar Services: Diffuse & distribute services (7% of jobs in US) - transportation (primarily trucking) - Information services (publishing, broadcasting)

Public Services Provide security/protection for citizens & businesses 4 % of jobs in US Police, fire, military etc. Different levels of gov’t control

Changes in # of employees Growth of employment has been in services Primary/Secondary jobs on decline Largest growth is in producer services (especially professional services) Specific areas of growth in all services: health-care, entertainment, restaurants

Employment Change in U.S. Fig 12-2: Growth in employment in the U.S. since 1970 has been entirely in the tertiary sector, with the greatest increase in professional services.

Origin of Services Personal services probably came 1 st (religion, education) Began as permanent settlements came to be Specialization Public services for protection (military, gov’t) Retail services in the form of trade, producer services began as people were needed to facilitate this trade
