Protestant Reformation & Lutheranism

Protestant Reformation What is the Protestant Reformation? -- What is the Protestant Reformation? -- a reaction against the abuses of the Catholic Church Protestant – someone who protests against something they don’t believe in.

Martin Luther German monk who was deeply religious He disagreed with: The sale of indulgences (money to the church in exchange for a place in Heaven). The idea that what you do on earth determines whether you get into Heaven.

Ninety-Five Theses 1517: Luther wrote 95 theses – or arguments – against the sale of indulgences The invention of the printing press enabled these ideas to spread throughout Northern and Central Europe. Luther’s ideas gained popularity Germans especially liked this idea, as they were tired of giving their money to Rome and following Roman orders.

Luther’s Beliefs About Religion Lutheranism Salvation earned by faith alone (not actions, just faith) The Bible (not the Pope) is the only Christian authority Priesthood (brotherhood) of all believers Church leaders tried to force Luther to recant – or take back his ideas – but he refused.
