Chapter President’s Role Understanding your new role as the Leader of a local chapter. Developed By the RCI Georgia Chapter

Understanding the role of President The goal of this presentation is to assist you to understand the leadership role and responsibility that you have accepted as President of a local area chapter of RCI.

Learning Objectives Understand the Role of the President Know the Duties of the Office Know the Unstated Duties of the Office Learning how to Leave a legacy of which you are Proud.

Understanding the Role of President The Presidency of a local Chapter is redefined by each person assuming the office.

The degree of success of the chapter each year is largely dependent upon the President. Yes – on YOU! Understanding the Role of President

This person has been not only chosen to lead but also to represent the Chapter. The Chapter President is the image of local RCI to the Region, RCI, the construction industry and to the public in general. Understanding the Role of President

The mission of RCI is to ensure the credibility of the roofing, waterproofing, and exterior wall consulting professions. – To represent the interests and values of the current and future membership – To provide for the professional development of our current and future members – To convey RCI's perspective to the public and to the roofing, waterproofing, and exterior wall industries – To support professionalism, ethical behavior, education, career opportunities and research in the roofing, waterproofing, exterior wall, and related industries mission statement So know the mission statement of RCI and endeavor to uphold and honor it in all you do.

Understanding the Duties of the Office – The President shall attend the following functions: Chapter Board Meetings (Preside over this meeting) Chapter Meetings. (Preside over this meeting) Committee Meetings as requested. – Serve as Chair of the Executive Committee.

Selection of Committee Chairs (also known as “Directors”). – And provide specific direction and coordination through them: Director 1: –Education. –Executive. Director 2: –Membership. –Finance. Understanding the Duties of the Office

– Delegating responsibility and authority; utilizing talent; involving the membership. – Appointing delegates to Annual Convention. Coordinating registration with Chapter Secretary. – Preparing a comprehensive year-end Chapter Report of the activities of the Chapter for submission to the Region Directors. – Assisting the Nominating Committee in selection of new Chapter leadership for the upcoming year. Understanding the Duties of the Office

– As you carry out the duties of President, keep your Vice-President informed and involved. This is the time designated for the Vice- President to "learn the ropes." Smooth transition and continued strong leadership depend a great deal upon how actively you carry out this training. – Inform the Vice-President of year-end duties, including information transmittal to RCI and Region. Understanding the Duties of the Office

Understanding the Unstated Duties of the Office Lead – No one here works for you – they are volunteers and as such you have to LEAD them. – Define your goals first to yourself and then to the chapter. – You will chair a lot of meetings. Make it a point to know the process.

Build a Team – Your are the chief RECRUITER for your team AND your successors Understanding the Unstated Duties of the Office

Communicate!!!! – Work the phones. – Share your goals. – Build consensus and support. – Attend meetings. – Be accessible. Understanding the Unstated Duties of the Office

Others: – Assign responsibilities or assistance to things like: Chapter Award Application Nominating Committee Solicitation The Chapter Website and/or Newsletter ALL Committees!!!

Knowing how to Leave a Legacy Know YOUR goal for this year. –Have a stated goal for your year as President. –Recommendation: publish it in your first letter to the members in the newsletter or on the website (however your chapter communicates). Share what you hope to accomplish.

You can’t do it alone so make sure you recruit. Bring in better, smarter, harder working people than you! REPLACE yourself not just next year but for years to come. Knowing how to Leave a Legacy

Key factors for success: Remember that you represent RCI. Recruit – and do it on THAT basis.

Key factors for success: Familiarize yourself with the governing documents for your chapter : – Your Chapter By-Laws. – Robert’s Rule of Order

Key factors for success: Help every officer to know His/Her role. Share the Chapter By-Laws with THEM – their job/role descriptions are in there!

Pitfalls to Avoid This isn’t a company and you don’t run it so keep perspective! lead RCI is a volunteer organization and those volunteers voted YOU in to lead them. Not to be King – honor them with all you do.
