GFSAD 30 WEBSITE UPDATE WITH INPUTS FROM: PRASAD THENKABAIL, CRISTINA MILESI, JEFF PETERS, JEANNE JONES JANUARY 17, 2014

Temporary Website

Planning for Official Website  Website building will start in year 2  Hosting and design will be provided by personnel at USGS Menlo Park  Working with Jeff Peters and Jeanne Jones, web development leads at USGS in Menlo Park  Coordination with LPDAAC (Dave Mayer and Stacie Bennett) for hosting final project results

Next Steps  Decide on amount of data that needs to be distributed: 1. Cropland extent (multiply by 4 decades) 2. Irrigated vs Rainfed 3. Cropping intensity 4. Crop type for 8 crops (one layer or 8 layers) Constraints on hosting storage need to be resolved - Where is the preliminary data for distribution going to sit?

Next Steps (cont.)  Decide on functionality  Web server with layering and zooming functionality  Data download: by continent, country, path row, MODIS tile, user defined rectangle?  User interaction to collect feedback and improvements (crowdsourcing functionality)

Example Websites for Global Landsat

 m/science-2013-global-forest Global Forest Change (Matt Hansen (UMD)/Google)

Global Land Cover from Peng Gong

 Examples of websites distributing global data at 30m:  Global Forest Change (Matt Hansen (UMD)/Google) e-2013-global-forest  Global Land cover from China (Peng Gong)  Global Land cover from USGS (Giri)?

Crowdsourcing validation:  Geo-Wiki

Map Display and Data Export – Orange County example

Mobile collection on all Android and IOS devices (html 5) GPS with device accuracy, photo and sound collection Offline mode, collect data and it will sync when device connects You design the mobile web page Set user category from mobile: researcher or crowd sourced See and query results on a map, from mobile or desktop Field collection / verification, researcher and crowd sourced

 -Additional costs for updating the data  -Hosting data may be defrayed if we take advantage of LPDAAC

Outsourcing the website  Quote from GIS Cloud:  Set up fee: $2000  User feedback functionality: $ 6000  Selecting custom area and extracting data: $4000  Enabling OGC (WMS, WMTS) web services per layer basis: $4000  Map Portal application: $950 / year  Data hosting (8 Tb): $29,500 / year ($1,000 / year for 100 GB, 1 Terabytes for $5,500 / year)  Total: $16,000 for development + $31,000/yr for data hosting/services
