18 June 20031Integration Review B. Schmidt Outline: Filter design and basic concept to ensure seismic stability Filter Installation and the required tooling Muon Filter Design and Installation

18 June 20032Integration Review B. Schmidt General points: Muon filters are made of iron blocks which have been recuperated from WANF. Blocs are being cleaned and painted at present. The large blocks (FT1688) are of (L,W,H): 159.7±0.3  79.7±0.3  80±0.8 cm 3 They iron walls have to be installed within an envelope 82cm ->Each block must be positioned with a precision of ±2mm along the beam axis -> Special tooling is required to position the blocks for building the iron walls Muon Filter Design

18 June 20033Integration Review B. Schmidt Muon Filter: Block Cleaning

18 June 20034Integration Review B. Schmidt Concept for seismic stability: Create mono-bloc Muon Filter Design

18 June 20035Integration Review B. Schmidt Muon Filter Installation Support structure: -> Moving on rails of ex Delphi end-cap

18 June 20036Integration Review B. Schmidt Muon Filter Installation Precision frame: The frame will be positioned on concrete blocks The guides will be precisely adjusted by means of a theodolite (?) The three filters of one half of the system will be mounted together Guides Frame

18 June 20037Integration Review B. Schmidt Sequence: Iron wall towards the cryogenics is mounted first, then the other side Muon Filter Installation

18 June 20038Integration Review B. Schmidt Sequence (cont.): After the mounting of the walls –Boardings will be mounted which ensure sufficient seismic stability –plugs around the beam-pipe will be mounted (to reduce the particle rate) Muon Filter Installation Boarding Plugs

18 June 20039Integration Review B. Schmidt Sequence (cont.): Filter behind station 5 (MF4) is mounted last, once the cryoline installation through RB86 is finished and the quay is removed (August 2004) ->Time constraint for LHCb detector installation Muon Filter Installation MF4

18 June Integration Review B. Schmidt Resources: Expenses for muon filter installation and tooling are covered by the infrastructure budget Work on muon filter installation will be carried out by the LHCb experimental area team between February and September 2004 It requires 3-4 people (including crane driver) for about 7 months -> about 120 man weeks Muon Filter Installation

18 June Integration Review B. Schmidt Work to be done: Drawings (Pierre Jouvel): –Design and production drawings for support of MF 4(1 month) –Production drawings of tooling for filter construction (3 months) –Production drawings for the boarding (2 months) –Design for plugs between filters and beampipe support(2 months) Calculations (Joao Batista): –Seismic stability of the Filters(1.5 months) –Seismic stability of the Support structures (1.5 months) ->Most of this work should be finished by November >Schedule is very tight ! Muon Filter Preparation
