Trends in Health Care Health Team Relations History and Trends of Health Care Unit Objective 4 Explore current trends in health care.

Cost Containment Reasons for high health care cost a. Technological advances b. Aging population c. Health-related lawsuits

Cost Containment Methods of cost containment a. Diagnostic related groups (DRG) b. Combination of services c. Outpatient services d. Mass or bulk purchasing e. Early intervention and preventative services

Can you think of another way to reduce health care cost that was not addressed in the previous list? Another way to contain rising cost of Health care is to put a cap on malpractice lawsuit awards.

How do the DRG rules benefit patients financially? If a patient has insurance that pays by the DRG rules the patient does not have to pay for any of the bill that the health care provider charged over the DRG limit.

Additional information about Cost Containment in Health Care can be found in the Health Science Fundamentals text book on Pages 35-36.

Do you know what the trend is? A trend that has been practiced for hundreds of years will be discussed next. Because it has always proved to be a more cost effective way to deliver health care it experienced a dramatic increase (400%) when DRG’S were introduced in the 1980s. Do you know what the trend is?

Home Health Care Current Trend Definition: Care that is provided in the home for patients who need health service but not hospitalization. Health Science Fundamentals text book on Page 29

What kind of care can be provided by home health care professionals? Nursing Physical Therapy Respiratory Therapy, Occupational Therapy, etc. Dieticians Personal care assistance (bathing, dressing, etc.) Homemaking (housecleaning, food shopping, and cooking)

Is home health care new? Is it here to stay? Home health care began in the United States in the1880s. Today, it is estimated that well over 7.6 million people currently receive care from home health care providers. Data from: Home Health Care: An Essential Solution to America’s Health Care Challenges

Reasons for the Growth in Home Health Care Medical advances allow better management of chronic and incurable diseases, including pathologies related to HIV and AIDS. Medicare's diagnosis-related groups promote earlier discharge of hospitalized patients, reducing the length of hospital stays. Patients (or caregivers) often desire to avoid prolonged expensive care at the end of life. Patients choose to receive care in the home.
