National MLK Day Program  Developed MOU in November 2007  Because home fires are America’s biggest threat, focused on fire prevention and canvassing homes with door hangers during MLK Day of Service  Kicked off 1 st MLK Day of Service in 2008 with 10 cities and 2,000 volunteers  In 2011, formalized the program and worked with HOPE worldwide in 28 cities in 2012

National MLK Day Program  Expanded to September 11 th Day of Service and Remembrance in FEMA’s U.S. Fire Administration began to support efforts.  HOPE worldwide received the Corporation for National & Community Service grant  2012 – Awarded 22 sub-grants  2013 – Awarded 22 sub-grants

2012 MLK Day Overview  Volunteers canvassed neighborhoods with fire safety and prevention messages and door hangers in English and Spanish  Focused on neighborhoods vulnerable to fire and where Red Cross responded in  Events occurred between January 7 – February 12, 2012  Participated in 70 cities and reached more than 312 neighborhoods

Outcomes

2012 MLK Day Total Reach  158,610 Door hangers distributed  143,653 Households visited  22,402 Conversations held  7,544 Volunteers  182 Employees

Collaboration with Red Cross and HOPE worldwide 28 cities worked together Both organizations responded 100% likely to work with each other in the future

Increased Collaboration with Multiple Partners  “Because this project is so user friendly it was very easy to plug in any and all volunteers, even with no prior Red Cross experience or knowledge of fire prevention.”

Increased Fire Department Involvement  “Fire department participation was key for our event as they provided an engine and firefighters who canvassed along with our volunteers.”
