South Dakota Project Integrate Penguins Ignite 2010

 The first American leader to suggest creating a public school.

 No electricity  They used quill pens & ink wells  Education not mainstreamed, & not available to everyone,  Key subjects math and English

Connections from east to west making the trip to California take only days

 Free public education at the elementary level was available for all American children by the end of the 19th century.

 By 1918 all states had passed laws requiring children to attend at least elementary school.

 First publicly supported secondary school in the United States was the Boston Latin School, founded in 1635.

 From 1900 to 1996 the percentage of teenagers who graduated from high school increased from about 6 percent to about 85 percent.

Near the end of the 20 th century more than 60 % of 18 to 24 year olds, or over 14 million students, were enrolled in about 3500 four- year and two-year colleges.

Bush’s 2001 Law of No Child Left Behind.  Based on stronger accountability for academic achievement

 More freedom for states and communities  Proven education methods  More choices for parents.
