PowerPoint Teaching Tool Page Slide Guide to Listening Comprehension 2 15 TOEIC Test: Listening Comprehension Exam Essentials Test Part:Listening III Type: Short Conversations Number of items:30 Choices per item: 4 Time between items:8 seconds

PowerPoint Teaching Tool Page Slide Introduction to Part II 2 15 TOEIC Test: Listening Comprehension This part of the Listening Section consists of 30 short conversations between a man and a woman, two men or two women. There are three or four parts to each conversation: the first person says something, the second person responds, and then the first speaker responds to the second speaker. Here are two typical patterns: Speaker 1: Asks a question. Speaker 1: Makes a statement. speaker 2: Responds to the question. Speaker 2: Asks a question about speaker 1: Comments on the response. the statement. Speaker 1: Responds to the question.

PowerPoint Teaching Tool Page Slide Introduction to Part II 2 15 TOEIC Test: Listening Comprehension The conversations are NOT written out in the answer book. There are eight seconds between each of the conversations. In your test book, there is one question about each conversation. Below the question, four answer choices—(A), (B), (C), and (D)—are written out. The question and the answer choices are NOT spoken on the audio program. You must decide which of these four choices answers the question best based on information in the conversation.

PowerPoint Teaching Tool Page Slide Tips for Part III 2 15 TOEIC Test: Listening Comprehension 1. Answer the questions as quickly as you can. As soon as you answer a question, preview (look ahead at) the next item in your test book. 2. When you preview an item, the most important thing to do is to read the question. If you know what the question is, you know what to listen for when you hear the conversation. 3. As you are listening to the conversation on the audio program, read the answer choices. Don’t close your eyes or look away. Reading while you are listening may seem like a difficult job, but the more you practice this skill, the better you will become at it. 4. Remember: Incorrect answer choices sometimes have a word or a phrase that you heard in conversation. Don’t choose an answer choice only because it has words from the conversation.

PowerPoint Teaching Tool Page Slide Tips for Part III 2 15 TOEIC Test: Listening Comprehension 5. Correct answers often have synonyms (words that have the same meaning) of words from the conversation, or they may express the same idea with other words. For example: One of the speakers may say, “The flight is leaving at seven.” The correct answer may say, “The plane is departing at seven.” 6. If you do not know which choice is correct, try to eliminate (throw away, don’t choose) answers that you think are incorrect, and then make the best guess that you can. 7. After you have heard an item and chosen an answer, stop looking at that item in your test book and stop thinking about that conversation. Go on to the next item. 8. Remember: Timing is very important! You have only eight seconds between items.
