Presentation transcript:

How does your program define and measure success? o School counselors get evaluated once a year by a supervisor; mainly the school principle o Teachers have a whole new evaluation process: APPR – Annual Profession Performance Review o The school district as a whole has a NYSED report card pdf o Students are measured by being tested and graded by the teachers

How do managers assess how well staff members are doing at their jobs? o There is a subjective evaluation by the administrative to see if they are meeting the needs, knowledgeable in the field, and how well they work and interact with the teachers and the students. The principle does personal evaluations and observations o There is a School Counselor Professional Performance Review o Ratings are categorized by C: Commendable, S: Satisfactory, S/R: Satisfactory with Recommendations, U/R: Unsatisfactory with Recommendations, and N/A: Not Applicable o They are evaluated by content knowledge, professional knowledge with career exploration/preparation, knowledge and delivery of intervention services, and implementation of individual and group guidance/counseling. They are also rated on the knowledge of student development, student assessment, professional and collaborative relationships, and reflective and responsive practice.

What standards are used to determine if the organization as a whole is being successful? o We start here by looking at the school’s outcomes which include: o Student scores on tests, standardized tests, SAT/ACT Scores o The graduation rate and percentage o Acceptance rates towards Colleges or Universities and students who go into trade schools or the work field

What sorts of things are overlooked? o The relationships between the teachers- students, teachers-counselors, students- counselors o Some staff are there to just do their job, and don’t care for the student’s success in education o The school culture- the general feeling that staff have about being there o Morale as a whole- confidence, enthusiasm, and discipline o The connection between the school and the community o The effectiveness that the Board of Education has on the school, when in reality they don’t know what is actually going on in the school

Structural Functionalism o School counseling programs support the Standards of Learning by providing guidance to students in their academic, career, and personal and social development. School counselors collaborate with parents, teachers, administrators and others to promote learning and help students establish and achieve their education, career, and personal goals.
