SPECIAL EDUCATION NEEDS In Italy pupils with special needs are distinguished in Children with “disability” – in Italy “different ability” (L. 104/92) Children with specific learning disorders (DSAp) (L. 170/2010) Children with other special education needs (Bes), as well: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Borderline cognitive functioning Children with socio-economic disavantage Foreigner children who don’t speak italian every child But every child may need special education in a particular moment of his life, due to physical, biological, physiological or even social or psychological reasons.
With respect to such needs, it is necessary that schools provide adequate and personalized response (direttiva BES 27/12/2012)
Different ability
Different Ability The social, cultural and educative integration of peoples with disability is regulated by the L.104/92. integrated In Italy pupils with different abilities are integrated in schools. We don’t have special school or special classes. Pupils are followed by a team which includes a neuropsychiatrist and a social worker.
Different Ability support teacher The class in which there is a child with different ability have a support teacher for a number of hours determined by the headmaster and the team that follows the child, within the workforce assigned by the Ministry.
Different Ability PEI Children with different abilities have a individual program of study (PEI). The team that follows the child meets two or three times a year.
Different Ability evaluation At the compulsory education level, the evaluation of these children is based on the specific learning objectives designed in PEI (individual program of study).

Specific learning disorders (DSAp) Specific learning disorders occur in the presence of appropriate cognitive capacities, in the absence of neurological diseases and sensory deficits. The reference standard for DSAp is the L. 170/2010
Specific learning disorders (DSAp) dispensed Pupils with DSAp are dispensed from some schoolwork as copying from the blackboard, read aloud. compensate They can compensate their difficulties by using tools as concept maps, the calculator, the computer.

Other BES specific Children with different ability or with specific learning disorders have a specific medical certification, or a psychological diagnosis, as shown previously. In presence of objective evidences, as medical observations or reports of social services, even if a child haven’t nor different ability nor specific learning disorders (DSAp), the team of teachers can draw up a PdP (personalized teaching plan) and carry out any didactic strategy such as dispensative measures and compensative tools.
Exam and special needs Pupils with different ability can carry out differentiated examination tests. Pupils with DSAp and other special needs must carry out the same examination test of other students, but can use compensative tools and can have more time to complete the test.
