What elements are in your group? B - Boron Al – Aluminum Ga - Gallium In - Indium Ti - Thallium

Why are they in this group/ what do they have in common. They all have the same number of valence electrons.

Are they any exception to the group? Boron (metalloid)

Are they metals, nonmetals, of metalloids? Aluminum - Metal Gallium - Metal Indium - Metal Thallium - Metal Boron - Metalloids

What state do they exist in at room Temperature? All the Elements are solid at room Temperature. (Gallium has very low melting point to the rest, so if you hold gallium in your hand it melts and becomes a liquid.)

Are their any trends in the group? Yes, from boron at the top of the group and thallium at the bottom of the group there boiling point decreases and the density increases

How many valence electrons does the group have? 3

List 5 uses of some of the elements in the group. Aluminum 1.Aircraft, bicycles, and window frames. 2.It is in containers that store drinks and foods. 3.Precious stones such as rubies and sapphires are made from aluminum compounds. 4.Aluminum cables which conduct electricity over long distances 5.Other aluminum compounds are used in water treatment plants, and antiperspirants.

List 5 Properties (Chemical/Physical) 1.Boron exists naturally as a compound, but not as a pure element because it is radioactive 2.Aluminum is a very reactive metal. 3.Aluminum is the most abundant metal in the earth’s crust. 4.Gallium compounds occur widely in the earth’s crust, found in small amounts in many minerals 5.Thallium metal has no commercial uses, but its compounds are used in radiation detectors.

List at least 3 interesting things you learned about this group. Gallium is a rare metallic element that is liquid near room temperature, expands on solidifying, and is found as a trace element in coal, bauxite, and other minerals. Jons Jacob Berzelius identified boron as an element in Indium was discovered by Ferdinand Reich and Theodor Richter in Germany in 1863.
