Objectives: Define bullying Identify ways to recognize bullying Practice ways to refuse and report bullying

? ? ? ? ? How would you complete this statement? Bullying is ___________________.

Bullying is Unfair. One-sided. Happening when someone keeps hurting, frightening, threatening or leaving someone out on purpose.

One way to decide whether or not a certain behavior is bullying, conflict or neither is to ask these three questions: oIs it fair? oHow does it feel? oDoes it keep happening?

If you see or hear something going on that doesn’t directly affect you, you are a Bystander.

Put yourself in the victim’s position and think of the first two questions: Is it fair?, How does it feel?

If you think that person feels upset, scared or threatened, then it is definitely bullying.

Refuse to join in – don’t laugh at mean jokes or join a crowd who are making fun of someone else. Stop the bullying - tell the person that what he is doing is bullying and he should stop.

Befriend the person being bullied – all of us need some support, especially when we are upset and scared. Lookout for the person being bullied everyone needs to know that his support network is strong; don’t let the person be alone.

Report the bullying - what’s going on is wrong and may be against rules; adults can take more action to stop it.

Once you have recognized that a behavior is bullying, you have two choices: Refuse Report

Act confident Hold your head up. Look the bully in the eye.

Keep your cool Ignore bullies. Walk away. Tell yourself to stay cool.

Be assertive Use humor. Tell them “ no thanks.” Tell them to stop and leave you alone.

When a student is in danger, the bullying should be reported. If someone has refused the bully and the bullying does not stop, it should be reported.

Important pieces of information you need to report a bully: oWho was involved oWhat happened oWhen the bullying occurred oWhere the bullying occurred

Reporting bullying is NOT snitching. When a person reports bullying, he is reporting behavior that is unfair, one sided and threatening.

Bullying is a crime.  Bullying violates the Florence District One discipline code and carries penalties.  Bullying is against the law, and you can go to jail.  Cyberbullying and telephone bullying are Federal crimes. Penalties can be severe and expensive.

We can have a bully-free school.  You can help.  Report bullies to a teacher, a guidance counselor, or a principal. awb
