Anti-Bullying Workshop Tuesday 20 th January 2015

To define ‘bullying’ (both ‘direct’ and ‘indirect’) To know the different forms bullying can take To know to school routines and procedures when tackling these issues To answer any questions you may have Aims:-

On a post-it note write a few words/phrases to complete this sentence… Bullying is… Task 1

What makes a behaviour ‘bullying’ rather than peer-peer conflict or unprovoked aggression? 1.It is ongoing and repeated 2.It is deliberate and intentional 3.There is a power difference between the person/people doing the bullying and the person experiencing it. ‘Bullying’ – What is it?

Several Times OnOn Purpose S.T.O.P

‘ Direct’ bullying is when the bullying is done directly to the target – he or she might be pushed, hit, tripped, told ‘you cant play with us’ or making signs directly to the person etc. ‘ Indirect’ bullying happens behind someone's back such as rumour spreading, whispering, making signs to each other, stealing, excluding someone indirectly for example making up excuses why they can’t come rather than telling them directly etc. ‘Direct’ and ‘Indirect’

Physical – bullying using physical force i.e. punching, tripping etc. Verbal – name calling/ saying unkind things Emotional –spreading rumours/ ignoring/ turning others against you Racial – bullying about skin colour or religious beliefs Cyber – bullying through the use of technology i.e. text messages/ / chat rooms/ social networking etc. Bullying types..

On your table you have a selection of scenarios – can you decide whether it is ‘bullying’ or simply ‘unkind behaviour’ AND if it is direct or indirect! Place the scenarios in the correct boxes on your Carroll diagram… Task 2 - Is it ‘Bullying?’

Start Telling Other People S.T.O.P

Here at Meriden we strive to :- Educate the children about what bullying is and the different forms it can take Encourage understanding and empathy towards all those involved in bullying Teach positive ways of dealing with a range of bullying situations Ensure the children understand the importance of telling someone if they are subjected to, or witness, bullying behaviour Deal with any incidents that occur swiftly and fairly involving parents and carers where appropriate Meriden C of E Bullying Policy

Any questions?
