One Size Does Not Fit All Managing from an Anti Oppression Framework CALCASA A.S.C.E.N.D. ACADEMY December 7, 2010

Objectives To develop an understanding of oppression To understand the impact of different forms of oppression on our work To create an environment that is welcoming and safe To identify organizational policies that create an anti oppression framework To be able to identify and challenge our own biases

Working Definition  "Oppression" refers to a social dynamic in which certain ways of being in this world--including certain ways of identifying or being identified-- are normalized or privileged while other ways are disadvantaged or marginalized. Forms of oppression include racism, classism, sexism, heterosexism, anti-Semitism, ablism, colonialism, and other "isms." Anti-oppressive work aims to challenge multiple forms of oppression.

Components  Anti Racism  Anti Sexism  Anti Heterosexism  Anti Ablism  Anti Ageism  Class Oppression

Politically Correct or Just How We Do Business  Does your workplace have anti-discrimination or anti-harassment policies?  Does your workplace offer training on human rights issues such as sexism/racism in order to ensure a harassment-free, inclusive workplace?  Would you be uncomfortable working with someone who was gay, lesbian, or bisexual?  Has anyone in your workplace ever experienced personal harassment or violence as a result of their sexual orientation?

Recruitment If we build it, will they really come?

 Write and review your Agency Mission Statement  How does your Mission Statement address work within an Anti Oppression framework?
