Review for Photosynthesis Test -Lab you did today -Lab on Lab Bench (we are going to run thru it now) -Material from Photosynthesis Lecture

Photosynthesis Virtual Lab What exactly did we measure again? CO2 Output=net photosynthetic rate= CO2 Consumed (P) – CO2 produced (R) -How did temperature affect this rate? -How did CO2 affect this rate? -How did light intensity affect this rate?

Lab on Lab Bench: 2 Parts Chromatology= this separates plant pigments based on their molecular weights and hydrogen bonding with paper.

2 CM 4 CM 6 CM Rf (reference front) value= distance pigment moved/distance solvent migrated. So if the solvent migrated 10 cm…

Quiz 1 on Lab Bench asks 3 questions about this…be sure you can do this. Now for the second part of lab bench…this is the DPIP part. DPIP is an electron acceptor. We use this chemical because it turns from blue to clear as it accepts excited electrons during photosynthesis. We use a Spectrometer to measure this color change. (No spec  )

TIME Transmittance %

“Design an Experiment” 1. Use DPIP as electron acceptor. It changes from blue  clear as it is reduced. 2. Measure the change in light transmittance with a spec. 3. Include a blank with no DPIP to calibrate Spec. 4. Include control. Include experimental treatments. 5. Measure transmittance and graph results.

Photosynthesis Review What are the four different pigments? What are the three parts to a photosystem? Antenna complex Reaction center chlorophyll Primary Electron Acceptor

Photosystem I=has specialized chlorophyll a molecule known as p700 Photosystem II= has specialized chlorophyll a molecule known as P680 Photosystem 2  Photosystem 1 (Noncyclic) Photosystem1= (Cyclic)

Calvin Cycle Make sure you know the input and output of this cycle (know the numbers) Words to know such as: rubisco, PGA, PGAL 6CO2+ 18 ATP + 12 NADPH +H  18 ADP + 18 Pi + 12 NADP+ 1 gulcose

C4…the new way! PEP vs. Rubisco OAA, malate CAM Photosynthesis…OAA  malic acid gets sent to the vacuole! -same as C4 except malic acid instead of malate What is photorespiration?

1. Oxygen is released here. 2. Stores energy obtained from light into NADPH. 3. Occurs in the stroma. 4. How is C4 different from C3? A)C4 plants require less water B)C4 plants can photosynthesis better in lower levels of light C)C4 plants are more efficient CO2 fixers

1. An outcome in noncyclic vs. cyclic outcomes? 2. Colors of all of the pigments? 3. How does photosynthesis compare to respiration? Essay Section: 1.One essay will want you to describe the whole photosynthesis process. 2.Other essay will be about photosynthesis labs (lab bench + what we did in class).
