CONTENT of the SOW-AnGR Info Document for SBSTTA 7 IV. COUNTRY REPORTS: SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT V. SUMMARY

LESSONS LEARNT from CASE STUDIES ON ANIMAL GENETIC RESOURCES The FAO informally requested preparation of several case studies to assist in identifying the requirements for establishing sustainable livestock development programmes. A brief description of each case study and lessons learnt from it is presented in this information document.

EXAMPLES OF CASE STUDIES I. Myth - Crossbreeding and replacement of locally adapted breeds will produce sustained benefits:  Vechur small cattle in India  Goat development programme in Ethiopia  Pantaneiro horse in Brazil.

EXAMPLES OF CASE STUDIES II. Myth - All production environments are alike  Nguni cattle in South Africa,  Box Keken pig in southeast Mexico  Norwegian Diary Cattle improvement programme

EXAMPLES OF CASE STUDIES III. Myth - Animal Genetic Resources conservation initiatives are always costly public sector programmes  Breton Black Pied in France  Cost effective conservation programmes in Brazil  Hungarian Grey cattle in Hungary  White Park cattle in Great Britain.  Basotho Pony in Lesotho,  Vietnamese Programme on Conservation of the AnGR

EXAMPLES OF CASE STUDIES IV. Community Based Management – and – Animal Genetic Resources  East African Goat and Galla Goat in Akamba community, Kathekani, Kenya  Different species and strains of poultry (chickens, pigeons and ducks) in Malawi rural communities  Djallonké sheep in Côte d’Ivoire  Farmers community involvement in management of the Biebrza National Park
