Who is in the room? A unique gathering of players from 22 countries Southern Africa: Angola, Botswana, DRC, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe African countries beyond the region: Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal And from abroad: Canada, Germany, Norway, UK, USA

Where did this start? Budapest 2009: Flavia Pansieri, head of UNV, asks regions to mark the 10 th anniversary of the UN’s International Year of Volunteers in 2001 November 2010: UNV, VOSESA and 20 partners from across southern Africa hold a strategy session to plan the conference 2010/11: 13 funders pledge support; 10 background papers researched; 50 speakers & moderators are secured; 7 site visits planned; 180 registrations 16 Oct 2011: A youth session marks the start of the conference proceedings.

Our objectives Showcase the contribution of volunteering and civic service to achieving sustainable development and peace Identify opportunities and strategies to strengthen the role of voluntary service in national and regional development Increase research on the nature, scope and impact of voluntary service Explore options for increasing a variety of regional voluntary service programmes in southern Africa

Outcomes envisaged Stronger understanding about how volunteering and civic service contribute towards achieving the MDGs and sustainable development Support from representatives of SADC member states for a UNV resolution on volunteering that will be presented to the UN General Assembly on 5 December 2011 Steps towards the establishment of a variety of SADC regional voluntary service programmes
