Author’s Purpose and Perspective One of the earliest types of computers was created in 1888 by Herman Hollerith. Hollerith invented a machine to count the results of the United States census of A census is an official count of how many people live in a place. Hollerith’s machine used a punch-card system to collect information. Census takers punched holes next to certain numbers. Then Hollerith’s machine read the pattern of holes punched in each card. This type of computer seems very old fashion compared to computers of today. Still, the punch-card machine was an important step in the history of the computer.

Author’s Perspective What type of information does the author give? What is the author’s purpose for writing this paragraph? What does the author’s perspective seem to be on this topic? Author’s purpose Author’s Perspective Details in Text

Library Data Base Search by author’s name, a book title, call number, a subject, or a key word. Searching by key word means the computer will search all records for this word or phrase. First think about the information you need to find: –Books by an author do a Author search –If you know the Title do Title search –If you need general information enter a descriptive keyword to search the entire collection.

Practice Reading Workbook page 45 This shows a screen from a library database. Let’s work together to practice how to find information in a library database.

Vocabulary Turn to page 214 in your reading book. Read along with me and think about what the author’s perspective could be about the internet.
