The Welsh Language

Welsh Language Welsh Language Act 1993 The principle: in the conduct of public business and the administration of justice in Wales, Welsh and English should be treated on an equal basis Welsh Language Board The 1993 Act established the Welsh Language Board on a statutory basis. Aim: to promote and facilitate the use of the Welsh language

The Board’s responsibilities Grants in support (4 voluntary organizations): - Mudiad Ysgolion Meithrin: The Welsh-language nursery school movement - The Royal National Eisteddfod of Wales - Urdd Gobaith Cymru: The Welsh-language youth movement - The Welsh Books Council. Administers grants to publishers, runs promotion projects (children’s book club)

Other Initiatives Radio and TV-programmes in Welsh The fourth TV-channel, Sianel 4 Cymru: 12 hours of programmes a day being broadcast in the medium on S4C Local newspapers? Publications are printed wholly/partly in Welsh
