National Board Certification: What is the Same, Different, and New? North Carolina District Coordinators Meeting September 12, 2014 Prepared by: Amber Parker Senior Vice President, Outreach and Engagement

What is staying the same?

Maintaining high and rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do; Providing a national voluntary system certifying teachers who meet these standards; and Advocating related education reforms to integrate National Board Certification in American education and to capitalize on the expertise of National Board Certified Teachers. What is staying the same? Our Mission

Teachers… 1.Are committed to students and their learning. 2.Know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students. 3.Are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning. 4.Think systematically about their practice and learn from experience. 5.Are members of learning communities. What is staying the same? The Five Core Propositions

What is staying the same? The Architecture of Accomplished Teaching

With a few exceptions! What is staying the same? The Standards

Deadlines First-time candidate apply by February 28, 2015 Full payment is due February 28, 2015 ePortfolio window: April 1 – May 15, 2015 Assessment center window: March 2 – June 15, 2015 Scores released on or before December 31, 2015* *Information will be provided to help determine whether or not to retake. What is staying the same? The General Cadence

What is different?

Effective Science English Language Arts Physical Education Effective Career and Technical Education What is different? Revised Standards

What is different? The Components

How will the revised assessment roll-out?

What is different? Flexibility While teachers can complete the entire process in one year once it is fully implemented, some may choose to do so over several years if that fits better with other demands on their time.  All four components must be completed in 3 years  Candidates still have two opportunities to retake (highest score policy will continue to apply)

What is different? Affordability The total cost of certification will decrease from $2500 to $1,900, with each of the four components costing $475. Important price points $475 for each component $75 annual registration fee

A computer-based assessment to demonstrate knowledge of and pedagogical practices for their certificate area. 3 constructed response exercises Approximately 45 selected response items What is different? Component 1: Content Knowledge

Component At-a- Glance –Available now Final instructions and rubrics –Coming in October

Component At-a-Glance Component 1: Content Knowledge

What is different? Component 2: Differentiation in Instruction Overview Based on the instructions for Portfolio Entry 1 for all certificate areas, except PE, which is based on Portfolio Entry 2 Candidates will submit the same type and number of student work samples, instructional materials, and other evidence using the same criteria. The final instructions and rubric will clarify what candidates need to do, what evidence to submit, and how the evidence will be evaluated.

What is different? Component 2: Differentiation in Instruction The instructions will be updated to: more succinctly explain the evidence to develop and submit; provide links to templates which allow candidates to enter information electronically for evidence; include the scoring rubric, which will be revised as necessary to ensure that it describes aspects of performance that are directly observable and measurable through the submitted evidence and written commentary; and add or emphasize language that clearly calls attention to this entry's focus on using knowledge of individual students to differentiate instruction
