Investigating Matter

Matter: Is anything that has weight and takes up space.   All matter takes up space........this is called VOLUME. All matter has weight......this is called MASS.

How do we describe Matter? (p.273) When you describe matter or an object........ these are called PROPERTIES   These properties are can be either PHYSICAL or CHEMICAL

How do we describe Matter? (p.273)  Physical Properties include: Describing it’s shape, color, texture, odor, & measurement.   Chemical Properties include: Matter’s ability to change into a NEW type of matter.

Properties Chart: Why do we do the things we do? Physical Property Chemical Property Helium lighter than Air non flammable Wood grainy texture flammable Gold shiny, soft, yellow won’t rust Aluminum light, stiff, silver won’t rust

MATTER is made up of tiny particles....... ATOMS and MOLECULES. How many different kinds of atoms (types of matter) have scientist identified? 92 naturally occurring found on Earth

Then why do we have an infinite number of different types of matter? Think of our Alphabet 26 Letters 20,000 + words   92 Atoms Almost infinite number molecules (We have all kinds of stuff)
