Presentation transcript:

You will check out an iPad per team after the bell!!! Be ready for Doorbuster- shh!!! Open Side by Side- PPT is there for Oct. 21; Unit video- link on iPad screen! Or, YouTube at drweastsaslclass (Also found in Unit Library, All Levels Oct 21)

ASL 1- a note before your Doorbuster  This six weeks, you will be preparing a 1 minute signing (1 min. minimum), as a test grade.  You will be signing in private (not in front of the class).  I will give you more details/requirements tomorrow, but today we are practicing ASL word order, to help you prepare.  Ready? then, next slide- onward to your Doorbuster!!!

Welcome ASL 1- Doorbuster: Please copy all notes below-  ASL word order: TIME OBJECT SUBJECT VERB  Gloss: --- SISTER ME HAVE  English: “I have a sister.”  Or, you can phrase it as a rhetorical question (where you ask and answer it- not really asking for someone to answer)  Gloss: FAMILY ME HAVE? SISTER 1, BROTHER, 2  English: “I have one sister and two brothers in my family.”  Now, I will explain (recording will play while I sign-I will play this recording from the front- you may begin the next slide if you are done with the Doorbuster before I sign).  Eg. “I went to the store yesterday.”

Now, copy each of these English sentences, and then gloss these ten sentences- a word in capital letters for each sign (in your composition book). Finished? Compare with a friend, fix if needed (100% for trying, you will get to correct it). We will also sign them as a class later. Reminder: English: Subj. Verb Obj.; ASL: TIME OBJ. SUBJ. VERB  1. “The teacher knows English.”  2. “The student knows Spanish.”  3. “The man goes to college.”  4. “The woman is a teacher.”  5. “The girl is deaf, the boy is hearing.”  6. “No, that is not right.”  7. “Where do you go to school?”  8. “Turn on the lights.”  9. “Close the door, and open a window.”  10. “The class is finished at 3:00.”  Finished? Copy Unit B, Part 3 (and Parts 1 and 2 if you have time)  -use the icons on the iPad to find the unit if possible (or, see me for help if you cannot find it). I will know you are done when I see you signing the new unit When everyone is done, we will see answers!

Wait--- ASL 1---  Do not go on to the next slide until I have checked your gloss for completion!!! Then you can check answers– not yet!!!  Just pause, and either watch Unit B videos again, or if you are ready, look at the list, point to a sign, and see if your group knows it!!!

Gloss answers –regular order are in red, some rhetorical examples are in blue: (check yours and correct them)  1. “The teacher knows English.”  ENGLISH TEACHER KNOW or TEACHER KNOW WHAT? ENGLISH  2. “The student knows Spanish.”  SPANISH STUDENT KNOW  3. “The man goes to college.”  COLLEGE MAN GO  4. “The woman is a teacher.” WOMAN TEACHER or TEACHER? WOMAN  5. “The girl is deaf, the boy is hearing.”  GIRL DEAF, BOY HEARING  6. “No, that is not right.”  NO, NOT RIGHT, NOT (can repeat NOT, if you want)  7. “Where do you go to school?”  SCHOOL YOU GO WHERE?  8. “Turn on the lights.”  LIGHTS TURN-ON  9. “Close the door, and open a window.”  DOOR CLOSE, WINDOW OPEN (remember, verb last for each)  10. “The class is finished at 3:00.”  3:00 CLASS FINISH or CLASS FINISH? 3:00

Welcome ASL 2! A quick note before your Doorbuster:  This six weeks, using Unit 13 vocabulary and old signs, you will be signing about a room you design in your house (real or imaginary house).  This will be a test grade.  Remember, Unit 13 list is on the front table.  I will give you details/instructions tomorrow.  But, today’s work is to prepare you and help you practice what you need to be able to do- so work hard and ask for help when needed!  Ready? On to the next slide and Doorbuster!!!

Welcome ASL 2! Today- Doorbuster: Please copy all notes below this line-  Tips on correctly signing items in a room:  1. To describe a room, sign from the door perspective (as if standing at the door, looking in).  2. Be sure you have transitions from item to item.  Eg. use a building feature (corner, door) or the most recent item (table, couch); then show the new item going from the last one (“place” the new item in space).  3. Classifiers will help a lot: these help you show shape, size, and location in the room.

Finished with Doorbuster? Now, make sure your team has only one Signing Naturally Level 2 book (gray with pink)  Shhh- no voice continues - peer checks- “shh” your friend so they can still get a 100% (up to 3 times)  Assignment- signed (no writing ) 10 min.-Read all of pages 2-3 (this will help you a lot on the room design test), and sign the 8 classifiers in the picture. 10 min.- Watch the Unit 13 video and copy all signs to learn them. 10 minutes: open the book to pages 4-5: make sure all in your group can see the pictures. Take turns signing an item in the photo (locating it-right, left, high, low using classifiers), and others in the group should point to the items. Each person takes a turn signing an item on picture one, then do pictures 2-4. I will sign an example when it appears many are ready

Welcome ASL 3 and 4! ASL 3- please get handouts from front table (Vocab.lists:Unit C, School Subj, Idioms; Through Deaf Eyes- for later) *ASL 4- I have your handout for later Today:  1. 5 min. Warm-up: Ask and answer with someone what you did this weekend (sign 2 things).  2. 5 min. Fingerspelling Maze  3. 5 min. Fingerspelling Challenge  4. Through Deaf Eyes (info, begin)

ASL ¾ Fingerspelling Maze-  Please read only the side  with the yellow highlight first  Finished? Flip it over and see it  with correct spelling  (and read note below)  ASL fingerspelling tips and tricks: Look at the first and last letters Look at the overall shape Catch whatever other letters you can Use context- what is the subject? 5 min.- Fingerspelling Challenge- each team needs a white board and marker- ready? Write what I fingerspell! Sometimes I will give a category, then later, not It is okay if it is difficult, but practice will help you!!! And using above tips- you may find it easy with categories!!!

ASL 3 & 4-Through Deaf Eyes  ASL 3- you will only be tested over any new information – so write as you want (eyes awake, no technology out, etc. )  A daily grade for watching, each day (receptive)  If you struggle staying awake, then you need to complete the entire sheet (but that won’t happen right? )  ASL 4- You have seen this film, correct?  Then, take the sheets and review together (in the hall if you prefer) - do you know all the answers?
