Unit 5 CULTURE Visual Vocabulary

CULTURE Shared characteristics that include customs, arts, food, and beliefs.

CUSTOM A practice from the past that people continue to observe

CULTURAL HEARTH An area where important cultural ideas began and spread to other areas

LANGUAGE Human communication that is written, spoken, or signed

RELIGION An organized system of beliefs and practices that seek to explain the meaning of life. Can be centered on one or more gods

ETHNIC GROUP People that share languages, customs, and common heritage

CULTURAL DIFFUSION The spreading of ideas, customs, beliefs, and other cultural elements from one group to another.

ANTHROPOLOGIST A scientist who studies the cultures of past and present to understand the complexity of cultures across all of human history.
