Text“HAPA” Textual support In “Hapa,” by Kristen Lee, she writes, “People say [‘What are you?’] as a pickup line in a bar or a question to prove their own assumption about my race” (41). Commentary THIS SHOWS THAT… Lee is often and unsuspectingly questioned about her physical appearance because she is half Asian and people don’t know how to label her. Commentary THIS IS BECAUSE… Most people like to categorize others because it makes it easier for them to process that individual through their cultural lens, to judge them. Because culture affects the way people view others and the world, knowing what ethnicity someone identifies with can aid in understanding or judging where they come from.
