SLIGHT HISTORY/BACKGROUND ADDED TO HELP UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF THE MUSIC. Listening Guide
Our Love Dedicated to his wife Lynette and based on his tune from the song ‘Grateful’ from the “Songs of Praise” album. He quotes Spencer W. Kimball (former LDS Church President) “Some think of happiness as a glamorous life of ease, luxury, and constant thrills; but true marriage is based on a happiness which comes from giving, serving, sharing, sacrificing, and selflessness.”
Our Love (continued) 0.00 Intro- Begins with a steady quarter note which is constant through the entire song. Regulates the tempo The melody begins, it is piano with a smooth rhythm and a motif that repeats with little variation, only moving up or down on the last note. A pentatonic and cadence is present Guitar is added, single strum set to its own melody. The guitar adds a nice timbre A sound is added, similar to a high voice. It fills out the space to link the melody and the guitar Crescendo ends and a decrescendo begins, like in an arc contour Crescendo to a forte with all instruments. The voice sound is much more defined after this point The voice is more drawn out, almost a howling Howling and voice ceases. Melody goes back to original, piano Begins to build to forte Crescendos to a forte and voice begins again. There is much repetition in the rhythm. 2.51Voice again changes to a howling to accent the melody. 3.10Howling is emphasized as it gets louder and repeats preparing to switch again to piano melody Original soft melody again starts Final musical statement, the sound gets more piano. The piano and guitar end on the same moment. The guitar strum holds until silence. 3.42Guitar fades out and ends.
“I have wept as I have seen the poverty and the suffering of people. My heart reaches out to them. I do not know what the solution is, except the gospel of Jesus Christ. I think it is the only thing that will help them and bless their lives. If they, even living in poverty and misery, can look to God with hope and faith it will sustain them in their hours of sorrow…They need a power greater than any earthly power to lift them and help them.” Hope Cardall shares this quote by Gordon B. Hinckley (former LDS Church President)
Hope (continued) 0.00Intro-Begins with a steady whole note. 0.12Slow melody starts, a series of notes played in groups of 3 with the last held out. Each set played twice. Normal, high, normal, low is the recurring pattern The melody starts to hit high keys. 1.07The melody hits its low pitch. 1.20Faint noises of children playing in the background and laughing start The melody hits even higher than previous in the song, adding to the children’s laughing. 1.37The melody completely changes. Very piano, and very light timbre. Very high piano keys. 2.05A distortion noise starts moving back and forth between the left and right channels. Like an electric guitar. The sound almost mixes with the children’s playful screaming The final notes in each section of the melody hold out to mix with the distortion noises and the playing children The distortion moves very high in pitch to an oo-ing. 2.40The distortion swirls and mixes from both channels, as if surrounding the laughter. 3.03Distortion notes lengthen. The whole note that was pacing the song fades and disappears The distortion decrescendos and fades out. The piece seemed to be played softly and then pianos off as it fades. 3.13Ends.
1987 This was the year that Cardall had reconstructive heart surgery which has now lead, over a 20 year period, to being listed on the heart transplant list. His faith in God and love of his family and life began as he endured the trauma of this event.
1987 (continued) 0.00Intro-whole notes begin. They don’t hit every beat leaving pauses. 0.12A quick 5 note scale plays alternating the whole notes. 0.43The melody changes by adding a lone whole note on a different key where the quick scale would be, first every other than every fourth. 0.47The melody groups 2 notes in this statement. 0.54Three notes grouped 1.00Three notes played again, higher scale. 1.06Back to 2 notes together, the melody is less active now. 1.12Slow down reiterated with 2 more notes. 1.18Whole notes end to complete silence. 1.25Music comes back. Slower tempo, different meter. Larger pauses in the melody, but much more variation. 1.31Note statements are now held out through the start of the next motif, making a vibrating echo in the background New melody. Contour arc present. 1.47Melody changes to more forte.
1987 (continued) 1.56Descending scale adds emotion to end of this statement and creates a new theme. 2.05Theme repeats with more emphasis. 2.09Melody fades while background notes hold solid. 2.13Melody starts to repeat, but shorter notes and higher keys. 2.40Ending theme begins again, in a much lower key this time. 2.59Melody changes to very high notes and has shorter pauses. 3.18Notes get more forte. 3.24Cadence present at the high note melody. 3.42Melody returns to the 5 note quick scales from the beginning. It alternates with 3.58Melody plays again but with more echo in the notes 4.11Repeats ending theme with a higher pitch. 4.20The high pitch descends 4.25Tempo changes and the repeating whole note from the beginning returns. Whole notes alternate with the quick scales 4.43Melody changes to a descending then ascending theme. This repeats twice. 5.08Whole notes slow down 5.12Fades out and ends.
Twinkle Little Star This song was written for his daughter Eden.
Twinkle Little Star (continued) 0.00The melody starts, it is a variation of the original. Half of the song is the normal melody, but half alternates with a repeating note. 0.35Crescendos up the scale with it sounding louder than at the beginning. The melody changes by dropping the repeating note, leaving a pause where they were, and playing short scales to emphasize half the remaining notes. 1.18The song has the second verse end, it calms down for a bit and becomes more piano. 1.24Melody picks back up for the next verse but at a higher, louder key. This verse more forte notes. 2.03The tempo slows and the notes lengthen 2.07Starts to fade out as it ends. 2.16Ends.
