Introduction to the National Learning Management System (NLMS) This presentation has been designed as a template for Trusts to adapt and change. It is aimed at raising awareness of the NLMS/ eLearning project with Senior Teams/ Managers/ Department meetings

What is National Learning Management System (NLMS)? Also known as Oracle Learning Management (OLM eLearning) Part of Electronic Staff Record (ESR) Enables the delivery of national, local and regional eLearning content in a cost effective way Access to an eLearning catalogue of over 190 national courses Flexible learning, wherever you have access to a PC, 24 hours a day Enables access to training from outside work via remote access Your personal training record is always up to date and will go with you if you change positions or transfer to a new Trust

eLearning and the Electronic Staff Record (ESR)

Why use eLearning? Reduced training time. Sometimes, but not always, eLearning can be quicker than attending a days training to cover the same topic Helps improve Trust compliance with statutory training requirements for the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and NHS Litigation Authority Improves access to professional training, for example End of Life Care, Radiography, Audiology, Blood Transfusion, Information Governance Limited training resources, i.e. rooms and trainers makes eLearning an essential option Enables a single point of access when using Self Service/Smartcard Access to ESR Starting the journey to ESR Employee/ Manager Self Service

Why use eLearning? (2) Learners can study wherever they have access to a computer Self-paced learning modules Development of computer skills that are transferable to other areas of learner's lives Promotes self managed learning Opportunity to provide a blended learning solution Appeals to areas of the workforce that work non-core hours Enables tracking and assessments built into the e-learning courses Appeals to different learning styles

Benefits for Staff Learners can study wherever they have access to a computer Access to a large number of nationally recognised courses Improves access to professional training, for example End of Life Care, Radiography, Audiology, Blood Transfusion, Information Governance Development of computer skills that are transferable to other areas of learner's lives Gives learners more options to complete essential training Enables more access to learning for staff who work non-core hours Appeals to different learning styles

Why use the NLMS? 7 NLMS To make learning a blended approach Links with QIPP and Clinical Frameworks/ Evaluation (ROI) Aligned with National eLearning Strategy/ Technology Enhanced Learning Strategy Increasing national content to met workforce needs Increasing number of Trusts using nationally >50% National direction to transition from other legacy systems

Cost Efficiency Benefits/ Evaluation Example Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust Safeguarding Children Level 1 completions in total 3568 (1808 through eLearning, 1760 by face to face). The results are as follows: Average Time for eLearning (allowing 15 minutes to log on) = 49 minutes Average Time for 1 hour face to face (allowing 45mins to travel) = 105 minutes This freed up 1687 hours (70 days) of time over the period of the project (2 months) which would otherwise have been spent away from service delivery

Financial benefits of using eLearning (Example) This data was kindly supplied by NHS North East Essex which compares Health and Safety training through classroom and online methods (October 2010) Banding/ Grade Rate Hourly No of Staff Classroom - (Hours - includes Average 1.5 hours Out of Office/Travel) Cost to attend Classroom Course eLearning Equivalent Average (Hours) Cost to complete eLearning Course Time Saving Hours Financial Saving - Individual Cost Saving to the Trust Band 1£8.8425£ £ £ 30.94£61.88 Band 2£ £ £ £ 33.57£6, Band 3£ £ £ £ 37.73£8, Band 4£ £ £ £ 44.10£6, Band 5£ £ £ £ 53.76£12, Band 6£ £ £ £ 65.87£14, Band 7£ £ £ £ 77.95£14, Band 8a£ £ £ £ 94.36£5, Band 8b£ £ £ £ £2, Band 8c£ £ £ £ £2, Band 8d£ £ £ £ £1, Band 9£ £ £ £ £ Total 1325 £75,841.33
