Te rakau sticks can be integrated across curriculum including maths, music, drama & HPE. NZ Curriculum Values Diversity Students will learn to appreciate differences in culture, language and ability. Community and participation Students will be supported and encouraged to participate in a safe environment creating community awareness for the common good. Considerations for this group/class Students to work in pairs. We need to consider that some students may not be comfortable with activities that require close proximity with other members of the class. It can also be a challenge to co ordinate te rakau. Student Needs: Working with te rakau sticks requires co ordination and communication. Students will develop these skills whilst appreciating and learning an activity from the māori culture. HPE Underlying Concepts Attitudes and Values Students will develop positive attitudes toward the contributions made by their peers. They will acknowledge the differences in cultures and abilities and be more rounded for it. Socio-ecological perspective Students will develop their co ordination and communication skills whilst learning the importance of open and honest relationships. Unit Learning Intentions 1.We are learning to…2B2 - Have positive attitudes when we participate in and create a variety of games and activities and discuss the enjoyment that these activities can bring to ourselves and others. 2.We are learning…2C2 – Identity, sensitivity, and respect by describing how individuals and groups share characteristics and are also unique. 3. We are learning…2C1 – To identify and demonstrate ways of maintaining and enhancing relationships between individuals and within groups by effective communication and co ordination. Success Criteria We will know we have learnt this when we can … Participate and contribute towards learning te rakau and waiata. We will reinforce this learning when we can make up our own games and waiata using te rakau. We will know we have learnt this when we can … Articulate the cultural origins of te rakau. Appreciate that every person is able to participate in these activities regardless of their physical or cognitive ability. Show respect for cultural differences by participating in activities that are not part of our own cultural practices. We will know we have learnt this when we can … Actively communicate with each other to overcome obstacles of timing and co ordination whilst performing te rakau. Teaching Learning Activities In order to be able to achieve criteria students will: Share aspects of their prior experiences with regards to learning te rakau or something new. Give the students the opportunity to handle te rakau sticks and allow them to become familiar with the “equipment” before putting into pairs to learn the activities. In order to be able to achieve criteria students will: Be given the opportunity to describe where te rakau may have originated. Teacher to demonstrate te rakau showing a video clip of similar aged children performing te rakau and provide an explanation to students of the cultural origins.. Teacher to demonstrate and explain how any person can participate regardless of their physical or cognitive ability. In order to be able to achieve criteria students will: Be shown how to perform te rakau. Students will also have the opportunity to create their own te rakau sequence and waiata should they like to. Students to perform these activities in their peers back to the class should they like to. Overview of Unit
