Narrative Set in the inner city of Brighton. Charles, a successful businessman, is diagnosed with a terminal form of cancer, and is given a few months to live. He observes a homeless man being threatened by a gang, and intervenes. Charles and Joe, the homeless man, begin talking to each other, and become good friends, enjoying each other’s company. For a substantial amount of time, the pair come to know each other well, trading stories of their lives, and discussing various topical current issues. However, one day, Charles cannot find Joe, and later discovers that unfortunately he has died. Grief-stricken, Charles considers committing suicide, but he remains inspired by Joe’s survival instincts, as well as his stories of his various morals, stories and consequences. Charles visits the place where he and Joe always met, and find a photo of a young man and his family. It is labelled with a name, the name of Joe’s son, who has banned Joe from seeing him or his young family due to the fact he was an alcoholic. Charles tasks himself with tracking down Joe’s son, and after weeks of searching and investigation, he succeeds in finding him, and gives him the bad news. The son is grateful for Charles’ efforts, and admits his shame that he did not reconcile with him. Charles is invited to the funeral, which Joe’s son takes responsibility for. Charles is satisfied that he has brought closure to the issues that plagued Joe’s family, and is happy that he will not be alone in the time he has left.

Characters Charles Is a businessman; inherited a substantial amount of his wealth (job and money) Has a high standard of living-wealthy, owns many materialised goods Low quality of life- no family; is depressed Suit conveys that he is a hard worker; has concentrated on earning and wealth Sees homeless man being threatened by a gang and intervenes Juxtaposes with typical social realism films- hardships portrayed despite middle/upper class status (paradox) Terminally ill (cancer) Not religious Friendship sparks with the homeless man, although he is still wary due to the circumstances (negative stereotypes of homeless people-drunk, etc)

Characters Joe Is a homeless man Contrasts with the businessman- has a low standard of living and a low quality of life He has become religious to give him hope Disowned by family due to alcoholism Has a hidden illness His only companion is a dog (until the arrival of Charles) Does whatever he can to survive without disobeying his morals He has worked hard through his life, but has not obtained his rewards He smokes
