You’re supposed to wake up early the day after Thanksgiving to go shopping for sales. You’re expected to arrive on time when invited to someone else’s home.. It’s not the custom to wear heavy coats in Florida in fall. You’re not supposed to snap fingers at servers in restaurants Adults are not expected to wear a costume on Halloween.

Past Regret Subject + should + have + past participle + …. (past time context)  You should have studied harder for the last test.  I should have visited Spain when I had the chance.  My friend should have waited for me after school, but he wasn’t there.  We shouldn’t have eaten at the restaurant. It was terrible!  In these contexts:  Did the person study hard for the last test? no  Did I visit Spain? no  Did my friend wait for me after school? no  Did we eat at the restaurant? yes We use should have/shouldn’t have + base form to show regret about something that happened in the past.

Mistakes We all make mistakes or bad decisions! For each situation, tell your partner:  one thing you should have done  one thing you shouldn’t have done In high school… When I first moved to Jacksonville… Last night… Ex: In high school, I should have studied French. Note: Your past participles should be different – do not use “done” in your sentences.

Comparisons My students in Florida are as nice as my students in DC. The weather in Florida is warmer than (the weather in) DC. Restaurants off campus are more delicious than (restaurants) on campus. The public transportation in Florida is not as good as (the public transportation in) DC. People working in stores in DC are less friendly than Florida.

(1 way)  How do we compare two things that are different? (4 ways)  What are two different positive comparisons? What is the difference in these ways?  What are two different negative comparisons? What is the difference in these ways?  The words in parentheses are optional. Why is this?

Comparisons – The Same or Equal Be + as + adjective + as The local café is as good as Starbucks. Grammar is as fun as a day at the park. I am as tall as you. Your eyes are as bright as the sun. This food is just as delicious as my mother’s.

Comparisons - Different One syllable adjectives & two-syllable with -y Be + adjective + -er + than Be + not as + adjective + as New smart phones are thinner than old ones. Old smart phones are thicker than new ones. An old phone is not as thin as a new one. Today, it is not as warm as yesterday. * Examples 1-syllable adj. short, tall, thin, cold, hot, warm, late, big 2-syllable –y adj. early, friendly, tasty, pretty Irregular adj. good (better), bad (worse), far (farther)

Comparisons - Different Long adjectives Be + more/less + adjective + than New smart phones are more comfortable than old ones. They are more expensive than old ones. Old smart phones are less intelligent than new ones. They are less complicated than new ones. * New smart phones are more fun than old ones. Examples Long adj. Interesting, intelligent, delicious, fascinating, boring, expensive Irregular adj. Fun (fun) *not funner
