The meaning of self-determination Social workers respect and promote the right of clients to self-determination and assist clients in their efforts to identify and clarify their goals. Social workers may limit clients'right to self- determination when,in the social worker's professional judgement,clients' actions or potential actions pose a serious,foreseeable, and imminent risk to themselves or others.

Self-determination is the core value of the social work practice.It fully reflects the respect of personal value,ability, initiative( 主动权） and so on.Its spirit has a close combination with Western culture of individualism value( 个人主义价 值观 ) ， stressed the respection of clients and the assurance of clients'right. However in the process of social work localization in China,self-determination has meet a series of problems.

The problems can be generated into two aspects: 1.helping behavior in China  the helper:leading role （主导角 色）,human relationship （人情） diversity （差序）， the investment of emotion （感情投入）  the receiver:lack of initiative （缺乏主 动性）,intense anticipation （强期待性） 2.social culture in China  confucianism （儒家思想）  collectivism （集体主义）  social priority （社会优先）

The principles when meeting the ethics' conflict First :the right of living Second:living right is superior to freedom right Third:freedom right is superior to happy right Fourth:personal right is superior to group right Fifth:sincerity
