FUTURE JOB TRENDS  By 2018 nearly 70% of jobs will require more than a high school diploma  Job Availability by 2018 = 1:2:7  For every 1 job requiring a professional degree (masters or PhD), there will be 2 jobs requiring a bachelor degrees and 7 which will require a technical or trade degree  Top Industries for employment and annual total wages paid in MN:  Manufacturing, trade, transportation and utilities, and education and health services

CHOOSING A COLLEGE MAJOR  Choice of major is the main driver of economic success after graduation  There are more opportunities in MN for people with degrees that are technical or geared towards growing sectors.  The evidence demonstrates the importance of choosing a major with an eye towards career paths and labor market trends in MN.

OPTIONS AFTER HIGH SCHOOL  On the Job Training  Apprenticeship Programs  Electrician, Mason, Carpenter, Baker, etc.  Military Training  Infantryman, Aircraft Mechanic, Combat Engineer, etc.  Jobs requiring only short term training  Waiter/Waitress, Retail, Telemarketing, etc.

TO ENTER CAREERS WITH ON THE JOB TRAINING:  Apprenticeships  Applicants must be at least 18 and have a high school diploma or GED.  Complete an application form and submit it with a birth certificate, school transcript, and letters of recommendation to the labor union office or employer.  See the following websites: constructioncareers.org constructionpartnership.com/apprenticeships/  Military  Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard  Most require a high school diploma, ASVAB test, solid moral character, physical and medical exam  Job requiring only on-the-job training:  The training occurs on-the-job See the User: century Password: panthers for more information

OPTIONS AFTER HIGH SCHOOL  Community and Technical Colleges and Short College Programs  Short Training Programs in fields like Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Pharmacy Tech, Truck Driving, and Railroad Conducting  1-2 Year Programs in fields like Nursing, Surgical Technology, Dental Assistant, Cosmetology, Business, Paralegal, Sonography, and many others  School options include RCTC and other Community and Technical Colleges as well as private career schools like Minnesota School of Business, Aveda Institute, Dunwoody, and Nova Academy

ADMISSIONS FOR COMMUNITY AND TECHNICAL COLLEGES  Every schools’ application process is a little different  Most have an open admissions policy  All require an application to be completed and copy of your high school transcript or GED  Admissions to some programs at the community or technical college may be more competitive than others and have higher admissions criteria than the general college,  Most typically require a placement test of some sort (e.g. Accuplacer)

OPTIONS AFTER HIGH SCHOOL  4 or more years of Education  A Bachelor’s Degree requires 4 years of Education  Jobs requiring a BA/BS include: Teaching, Social Work, Sports Facility Management, Many jobs in Law Enforcement, Business, and Government  Schools include: Winona State, University of Minnesota, and St. Olaf College  Some jobs require additional Graduate level education (Master’s or Doctoral Degrees)  Pharmacy, Medicine, Law, Psychologist, School Counselor, School Principal, Dentist, University Professor, Physical Therapist

COLLEGE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS  Four-Year College/University Requires:  4 Years English  3 Years Math (Algebra I, Geom., Algebra II, Math Analysis, Stats)  The University of Minnesota requires 4 years of Math  3 Years Lab Science (e.g. Bio, Chem., Physics)  The University of Minnesota requires 4 years of Science  3 Years Social Studies  2 Years (or more) Single World Language  Be sure to check specific college requirements as they often vary

COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY ADMISSION CRITERIA GPA/Rank High School Curriculum/Rigor Admission Tests (ACT/SAT) Letters of Recommendation Activities/Hobbies/Passions

COLLEGE ATHLETICS  If you want to play D-I or D-II sports in college, you must register with NCAA, pay a fee, and send a transcript (preferably during your junior year of high school)  You need to have a specific GPA and ACT or SAT score in order to be eligible to play D-I or D-II sports  You need to take a certain number of “college prep” courses in order to be eligible.  See your counselor for more details

MOST COLLEGES LOOK AT YOUR GPA AND CLASS RANK FOR ADMISSION PURPOSES  The cumulative GPA is an ongoing average of your semester GPA throughout high school  You will apply to college at the start of your senior year and colleges will only be able to see your semester grades from grades 9-11  Pay attention to your grades now  What can you do to raise your GPA? Do your best in your classes each semester.  Are you going to the academic resources for help?  Are you asking your teachers for help?  Like it or not, some admissions offices will view your grades as a reflection of who you are. How do your grades reflect who you are?
