MotivationsMotivations  Need for public services like news, video streams etc to handhelds  TV is the biggest media and the last one missing from mobile phones - DVB-H will bring this convergence to life  Mobile phones are real commodity equipment – ”everybody” has one  "2.5G/3G" could be used but is expensive  Digital TV DVB-T works extremely well – also in mobile environment  DVB-T based data broadcasting could be the solution

User´s Use Cases  Relaxation at Idle times for business users and travelers  Watching TV movies and Clips, Cartoons,..  Information for business users and travelers  Stock charts  Weather forecasts  News  Enjoyment for kids anywhere having fun with game console  TV clips and movies

Markets, Terminal & Standards DVB-H DVB-T DVB-H DVB-T

WW Mobile TV Development  Sony SES and Freescale front-end proposal for the DVB-H validation.  The complete version available in 4Q04.  DIBCOM Phase 1 prototype available in February 2004, supporting e.g. time slicing and MPE-FEC.  By March 04, phase 2 model ready including e.g. SI/PSI tables analysis.  By May 04, phase 3 model, cell handover and monitoring features are included.  Panasonic DVB-H Validation Receiver hardware includes antenna, DVB-T front-end, PC-card type de- multiplexer and laptop. The first version available by April 04.

 SIDSA will be able to perform e.g. MPE-FEC, IP-de- encapsulation and time slicing analysis. Final goal is to develop a Mobile Communicator with Wi-Fi, GPRS, UMTS and DVB-H connections. By the end of 04, product industrialization will be ready.  ProTelevision Technologies from Denmark has announced 4k modulator with DVB-H capabilities by end of  Nokia 7700 media device which supports time slicing (to the pilot market Q4 2004)  Other companies: NEC, Sumsung, Seimes …… WW Mobile TV Development - cont.

 Application/service is the king.  Low cost  Adequate quality (not always need high quality)  This is essential to 3G, DVB and B3G.  IP Video Streaming over 2.5 and 3G can only be a temporary solution.  The characteristics of mobile TV network is broadband for downlink broadcasting with narrowband up link channel.
