Created in 2005, to develop a coordinated and sustained Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) to enhance decision making in nine Societal Benefit Areas (SBAs) GEO today: 89 Members 67 Participating Organizations
In-situ Systems
FY 2011 FY 2009 FY 2008 Landsat Internet Data Distribution Based on per day 1M 2M 3M 4M 5M 6M Data delivered to 186 countries User shift to multi-year scenes at same location Exceeded 9 million scenes to date Scenes Selected 4 Daily Average = 53 scenes for best year of sales (2001) Daily Average ≅ 5,700 scenes of web-enabled data delivered
Improve and Coordinate Observation Systems Advance Broad Open Data Policies/Practices Foster Increased Use of EO Data and Information Build Capacity GEO Objectives
A Global, Coordinated, Comprehensive and Sustained System of Observing Systems
1.Uncertainty over continuity of observations 2.Large spatial and temporal gaps in specific data sets 3.Limited access to data and associated benefits in developing world 4.Inadequate data integration and interoperability 5.Lack of relevant processing systems to transform data into useful information 6.Inadequate user involvement 7.Eroding or little technical infrastructure in many parts of the world GEOSS Targeted Gaps
GEO WP – Rev 2 Incorporates technical & official comments from GEO community during summer 2012 & recommendations of 2012 WPS No major change to Rev 1 (Dec 2011): (i) Two Task Components created under the Global Land Cover Task (ii) Two Task Components removed (Carbon Capture and Sequestration & Ecosystem Capital Accounting) (iii) Four Disaster Task Components merged into two (iv) Task Leads updated, Task Descriptions & Priority Actions refined, and Resources Available for Implementation amended
Work Plan Symposium “Demonstrating GEOSS Added Value: Sprint to Summit” 4-6 June in Geneva Objectives Advance the Sprint to Summit initiative Develop cross-cutting demonstrators for Ministerial Summit & GEO-X Plenary Strengthen synergies across Tasks and accelerate GEOSS implementation Inform the Work Plan community of recent progress (outputs and activities) Develop practical recommendations for the 2014 Work Plan update (Task descriptions and contents) Collectively address issues and gaps Improve Component Sheet contents Implementation boards meetings 3 & 6-7 June
Ministerial Summit 17 January Post-2015 WG -> CEOS 2.Ministerial WG -> CEOS 3.Sprint to Summit -> CEOS Towards 2015
Sprint to Summit Joint Implementation Boards initiative Accelerated improvement of user experience of GEOSS Showcases (videos): added value of GEOSS & GEO Wider access to EO resources Increasing capacity of developing countries to use & benefit from EO Capabilities of GEOSS to be demonstrated include: Search, discovery & access to priority EO data (GEOSS DataCORE) Dissemination techniques (GEO Portal, GEONETCast, Community Portals) Action plan & dedicated action teams AIP-6 will contribute substantially Dialogue with Ministerial Working Group
Priorities 2013 Coordinated data acquisitions, data access & R&D support for - GFOI - GEOGLAM - Disasters & Supersites Sprint To Summit Architecture for Climate Mon from Space & Impl of response to GCOS IP Increasing developing countries benefits from GEOSS, in line with AfriGEOSS Increased coordination of in-situ networks and access to in-situ data Easier access to satellite data Supporting –WP management (TCs & PoCs) –Implementation Boards –Working Groups (Post-2015, Ministerial, DS) Bring GEO Secretariat to full staff complement -> Second experts
