The Allies are Victorious Chapter 32 Section 4

I Allied Plan for Victory & Turning of the Tide Stalin wants allies to open front in west to relieve pressure in the east 2 fronts = fighting in 2 regions Plan = weaken Germany on 2 fronts  death blow Start attack in N Africa angers Stalin-wanted France General “Monty” beats “desert fox”  retreat Operation Torch lead by Eisenhower  destruction of Afrika Korps

Luftwaffe destroys city but Russians ordered not to retreat After winter is over in Russia  Hitler sending troops to seize oil fields & to capture Stalingrad = Major industrial center Battle of Stalingrad Luftwaffe destroys city but Russians ordered not to retreat Russia counters but German’s ordered not to retreat Battle of Stalingrad = TURNING POINT of war Germany took too many losses and could only defend & retreat from this point on

Italian Campaign Allies attack Italy  toppling of Mussolini Mussolini fired by King  but back by Hitler Allies enter & Mussolini captured Shot & hung in Milan square

II Life on Allied Home Fronts US convert peacetime factories to wartime production  shortage of consumer goods Millions of Americans working in war industries (women) Allied powers propaganda to inspire more effort on home front Also prejudice prop after Pearl Harbor Japanese Internment

III Allied Victory in Europe D-Day = day of the invasion of France at Normandy beaches Eisenhower in charge of Operation Overlord Fake invasion fort at Calias http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCLJhxfj608 – D Day invasion

From France they head to Germany from the west Hitler orders large counterattack in west to split allied troops Broke into American lines giving it the name Battle of the Bulge Allies eventually win  Hitler’s losses lead him to only be able to retreat from that point on Hitler & his wife commit suicide Eisenhower accepts unconditional surrender from the Third Reich V-E Day = victory in Europe Day

V-E day marks end of fighting in Europe but fighting still in the Pacific theater Battle of Leyte Gulf Japanese risk entire fleet to destroy the American fleet Japanese suffered huge loss  could no longer effectively fight  Kamikaze Iwo Jima  Iconic photo raising the flag Manhattan Project  A-bomb used in Hiroshima & Nagasaki  Japanese surrender
