Gears Gears are wheels that have teeth around the outer edge. Gears can be used to transmit rotary motion. Year 8

Medium Density Fibre Board Medium Density Fibre Board is made from fine wood particles and adhesive (glue) pressed into a board. Medium Density Fibre Board is a manufactured board. Year 9

Aluminium Aluminium is grey in colour, lightweight, malleable and does not rust. Aluminium is used in the manufacture of aircraft. Year 10

Year 9

Capacitor An electronic component used to store a charge of electricity. In our steady hand game we used a capacitor to create a time delay. Year 10

Resistor An electronic component designed to control the flow of power in our circuit. A resistor can be connected using either leg in the correct pins. Year 10

Foundation The foundation supports the building loads and distributes them to the surrounding sub soils. There are two main types of foundations: Strip and Pile. Aesthetics Aesthetics Aesthetics is the appreciation of how a product looks. The aesthetics of a car is a major selling factor. Year 11

Insulation Insulation is used to reduce heat loss throughout a house. Insulation is placed in the cavity wall to prevent heat loss. Year 12

Ergonomics The relationship between a human and the products they use. Ergonomic data is used in the manufacture of motor vehicles due to the various sizes of all users. Decibels Decibels is the measurement of sound. 120 decibels is the sound of a jet engine. Year 13

Conservation Conservation is the protection and careful management of the environment and natural resources. Legislation is used to protect areas of conservation. Year 13

Volume Volume is the measurement of a three dimensional space. The volume of the swimming pool is measured by multiplying the length, breadth and depth. Year 14

Sustainable Sustainable- Capable of being maintained at a steady level without exhausting natural resources or causing ecological damage. A tree is a prime example of a sustainable material.
