Lois Mailou Jones By: Shawnee Kvasnicka

Biography Lois Mailou Jones was born in Boston in November 3, She went to Paris in 1937 where she studied painting at the Academie Julian, lived among the French, learned to speak French fluently, and painted views of Paris and surrounding areas. She attended the High School of Practical Arts in Boston, winning scholarships for special classes at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts The influence of philosopher Alain Locke, who encouraged Jones to draw inspiration from African art She was the second of two children of Thomas Vreeland and Caroline Dorinda Jones.

Accomplishments For more than fifty years, Lois Mailou Jones has enjoyed a consistently successful career as a painter. Lois also accomplished as a teacher, book illustrator, and textile designer. In 1928 Jones formed and chaired the art department at the Palmer Memorial Institute in North Carolina, and two years later was recruited to teach at Howard University in Washington, D.C

Explanation of Motivations and Goals Louis was inspired to draw by the beautiful natures land. She started to travel painting different places landscape. as well as the climate and aftermath of the Harlem Renaissance, motivated the depiction of African and African- American themes in Jones's early paintings. She loved colors Her parents gave her always had paper and crayons to encourage her. She went to a drawing class ever day after school.

Influential Her parents had a major influence on her life. They always had coloring books and crayons in there house. They also signed her up for art classes after school. The black culture also influenced her drawing. The different natures and the area surrounding her.
