2 WIN-PST3.1 Field Office Tools: Screening tools are available to help address identified water resource concerns in targeted areas The Windows Pesticide Screening Tool (WIN- PST) evaluates the potential for off-site pesticide movement in water, and its relative potential to chronically impact humans and sensitive fish species (Risk = Exposure x Toxicity)

3 WIN-PST3.1 Evaluates three pesticide loss pathways: –Leaching below the rootzone –Solution runoff beyond the edge of the field –Adsorbed runoff beyond the edge of the field Includes considerations for: –Climate and Irrigation –Soil properties (and macropores) –Field-specific organic matter and topsoil depth –Apparent high water table

4 WIN-PST3.1 Includes considerations for: –Crop residue management –Pesticide application methods broadcast, banded, foliar, soil incorporated –Application Rates standard, low, ultra low Results designed to guide the site- specific choice of appropriate mitigation strategies for all recommended pesticide uses

10 WIN-PST 3.1 When the results are analyzed hazard ratings of very low and low require no action as long as the chemical is used according to the label and meet quality criteria for Resource Management Systems (RMS’s) Ratings of Intermediate or High require mitigation measures to meet quality criteria

11 WIN-PST 3.1 High ratings warrant more extensive measures than Intermediate Mitigation measures may not be effective for Extra High rating if resources are highly sensitive or a high degree of resource protection is desired In these cases, an acceptable pesticide with a lower risk or an alternate method of pest control may be required

12 WIN-PST 3.1 Mitigation measures can be found in Table 1 in the Pest Management 595 Standard Table 1 identifies management techniques and conservation practices that have the potential to mitigate pesticide impacts on water quality

14 WIN-PST 3.1 Measures are ranked on their effectiveness to affect one of the pesticide loss pathways: Leaching, Solution Runoff, and Adsorbed Runoff Effectiveness is shown as “no effect” (blank), “slight effect” (+/-), “moderate effect” (++/--), and “significant effect” (+++/---)
