Physical vs. Chemical Changes

Anything with mass AND volume

A characteristic of matter such as size, shape or phase can be observed (with your senses) and measured. Density, boiling point, melting point, hardness, mass, volume, color, size, shape, texture, malleability, viscosity, smell, taste and more!!!

A property of a single substance that cannot be easily observed describes how the substance likes to combine (REACT) with other substances. flammability and reactivity

Properties of Matter Rap

X X X X X X X X X X X X X X

Keeps most properties, DOES NOT create a new substance Changing shape of something, changing its phase, adding paint, making smaller pieces Beautiful Chemistry: -CrystallizationCrystallization -Compare Liquids and GasesCompare Liquids and Gases

Physical Changes Gallium Spoon has a Very low melting point

Physical Changes Not all color changes are Chemical Changes

A NEW substance is created, two separate substances combine and rearrange their atoms. The new substance will have DIFFERENT properties. Beautiful Chemistry: -Gas ReleasedGas Released -Color ChangeColor Change -Precipitate Formed 1, Precipitate Formed 2Precipitate Formed 1Precipitate Formed 2 -New propertiesNew properties Beautiful Chemistry Website

Chemical Changes

Slo Mo Match Strike

P P P P P P C P P C C C C C C C P Changing shape Boiling- phase change New properties, something new created (dirt) phase change New properties, something new created Same properties, nothing new created New properties, something new created (iron oxide) New properties, something new created Something new created (photosynthesis, new cells) Changing shape New properties, Energy! created Same properties, nothing new created phase change Energy change!

Day 2 Let’s Review What We Know! (use your Physical Vs. Chemical Properties notes!)

Does not create a new substance- keeps most properties Ex: changing shape (cutting, breaking) adding color (paint, markers) A new substance is created. Atoms or Molecules are rearranged to form something with different properties. Energy changes.

If we have time… Pick a partner. Send one of your pair up to get a bag for the physical vs. chemical change sorting game. Pull out the examples and make two piles: –physical changes –chemical changes Record your answers on your demo data sheet (bottom of the back).
