Matter- Anything that has mass and volume and takes up space
Substances Expected Learning : to recognise that there are many different types of substances that are in use and to group substances into different categories.

Chemical ChangesPhysical Changes food colouring and water tearing up paper magnesium + hydrochloric acid manganese dioxide + hydrogen peroxide sugar dissolved in water water boiling copper sulfate + sodium hydroxide crushing a solid copper sulfate + iron sodium + water potassium thiocyanate + iron (III) nitrate ice melting

 During a physical change, some properties of a material change, but the composition of the material does not change.  As gallium melts in a person’s hand, the shape of the sample changes, but the composition of the material does not change.

 Physical changes can be classified as reversible or irreversible. o All physical changes that involve a change from one state to another are reversible. o Cutting hair, filing nails, and cracking an egg are examples of irreversible physical changes.

 Five Clues of a Chemical Change 1. Heat or light is produced (or absorbed). 2. A new solid is formed  called a precipitate. 3. A gas is released.  Bubbles, fizzing or a new smell. 4. A change in colour. 5. It is hard to reverse. Keep in mind…these are just clues, not hard and fast rules!
