For example, _______________. The character I selected is _____________ from The Tale of Despereaux. What makes my character unique is _________________. My character faces many challenges. For example, _______________.

First Paragraph - Introduction In The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo, Miggery Sow is a unique character because she has a hard life but dreams of being a princess. Miggery Sow faces many challenges. For example, no one cares about what she wants.

Second Paragraph - Compare In the novel, there are parallel characters who mirror one another. That is, two characters are similar, yet different from each other. Just like Princess Pea, Miggery Sow is a character who has experienced a lot of pain and hardship. For instance, Mig’s mom died when Mig was only six. Princess Pea’s mom died when she was twelve. In addition, Mig was sold by her father for a hen, a red tablecloth, and cigarettes. Princess Pea was kidnapped at knife point by Mig and Roscuro.

Third Paragraph - Contrast Although Miggery Sow and Princess Pea share some similarities, they are also different in some ways. Most importantly, Mig has a much harder life than Princess Pea. In fact, Mig not only loses her mom, but she gains an abusive “uncle”. Princess Pea still has her dad, who loves her.

Third Paragraph - Contrast Although (your character) and (parallel character) share some similarities, they are also different in some ways. Most importantly, (state the difference). In fact, (explain the difference).

Four Paragraph - Challenges When confronted with challenges, Miggery Sow has shown that she is resilient and hopeful. Furthermore, Miggery survives her mother’s death, her father’s perfidy, her uncle’s abuse, and Roscuro’s trickery. Despite all these challenges in her life, Mig remains hopeful and even dreams of becoming a princess.

Paragraph 4 - Challenges When confronted with challenges, (character’s name) has shown that she/he is (characteristic #1) and (characteristic #2). Furthermore, (Describe or explain how the character handles the challenges. This shows how or why you chose the characteristic to describe them).

Fifth Paragraph - Conclusion At the end of the story, (character’s name) finally learns/gains/experiences (describe something the character learns or gains or experiences through their journey). This is what makes (character’s name) such an interesting character. The author, Kate DiCamillo, created a (use the characteristic(s) from paragraph 4 to describe the character) character who makes you feel (finish this sentence based on how you feel).

Fifth Paragraph - Conclusion At the end of the story, Miggery Sow finally experiences acknowledgment, forgiveness, and kindness. First, Princess Pea asks Mig what she wants, and someone acknowledges Mig for the first time in her life. Secondly, Mig forgives her father and lives with him. Third, to make up for what he did, her father treats her kindly, like a princess. This is what makes Miggery Sow such an interesting character. The author, Kate DiCamillo, created a resilient, hopeful character who makes you feel amazed at the hardships some people have to live through and happy that there are happy endings even for people like Mig.
